Money matters: Saving self-worth

June 30, 2018

The feeling comes over you urgently. You just have to have it, whatever it is this time. You aren't powerless in the face of this pressure...but it feels like it. Think about it - it makes sense that you feel powerless because old spending habits are hard to break. Strong urges are hard to ignore.

Know that you can still choose. Recognizing choice begins with understanding your underlying motivation. Why do you want to buy? What will acquiring this latest must have mean? How will your life be changed? Know that what you have is entirely different from who you are. And who you are is not related to what you have. Don’t look at what you own when measuring accomplishments or financial self-worth, look instead at your personal integrity, your ability to stick to your financial plan and follow through with it - even when urges urge you to throw in the towel. Look at how trustworthy you are. Do you keep your financial promises to yourself? What are you doing to create financial peace of mind? Why is financial peace of mind important to you? Remind yourself of the answer often; it may just be the motivation you need to stay the course.

We have all heard the expression that peace of mind is priceless. That is especially true when it comes to money. There are many things that happen in our lives that we don’t have any control over. To be fair there are probably just as many factors we can control except we relinquish that control and make excuses for our abandon. We have a better chance at financial security when we stop making excuses and start saving self-worth.
